Welcome to The Black Dog Tavern, a cherished gem located at 20 Beach Street Extension, Vineyard Haven, MA. This delightful eatery, nestled by the water's edge, combines a cozy, New England tavern ambiance with breathtaking views of the harbor. It’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a place where every meal tells a story and every guest feels like family.

The Black Dog Tavern offers a mouthwatering menu that is particularly famous for its breakfast classics and freshly prepared seafood. As I perused the breakfast offerings, I was drawn to the Eggs Benedict, perfectly poached and paired with Canadian bacon on a toasted English muffin, all enveloped in luscious hollandaise sauce. For something more adventurous, the Lobster Eggs Benedict topped with buttered lobster meat and avocado takes brunch to an exceptional level for $38. You simply can’t miss this culinary delight!

Other standout breakfast options include the Shaggy Attack and the Red Hot Mama Burrito, bursting with flavors from jalapeños, cheddar cheese, and andouille sausage. The Hash & Eggs—a house specialty featuring corned beef hash—reflects the tavern’s commitment to comfort food that never disappoints.

Recent reviews reflect glowing experiences, like that of Lucy Collins, who praised the welcoming atmosphere and genuine service provided by staff like Zack and Tyler. It’s evident that The Black Dog Tavern values its patrons, creating a familial ambiance that enhances the dining experience.

For lunch or dinner, the selections are equally impressive. Guests rave about the Lobster Roll, a local favorite, and the delectable Codfish Tacos, both highlighting the freshness and quality that define this establishment. As Richard Thompson noted, the food is not only tasty but served in generous portions, ensuring no one leaves hungry.

However, the Black Dog Tavern is not just about food. It invites friends and families to gather over live music on select evenings, making every visit feel like a celebration. The friendly servers, like the seemingly magical Alice, enhance the experience, ensuring that every need is met with a smile.

Whether you’re seated by the window enjoying the view of ferries coming and going or dining al fresco, The Black Dog Tavern offers a delightful escape. The unique offerings, coupled with the friendly atmosphere, make for an unforgettable dining adventure. Don’t miss out on the infamous clam chowder—it ranks among the best on the island, as noted by many satisfied customers.

Family lunch on the vineyard, 10/10 recommend! We sat outside which was nice, the server we had was really nice but busy so she didn’t have time to meet and greet. We waited about 10 minutes once seated until she was able to come over to take our drink order, she also took our food order and we saw her again after everyone was done eating to give us our tab. The other servers were nice and refilled waters as they saw low glasses which was really nice of them. The tuna melt was great, I ordered it without tomatoes and bacon but with lettuce and onions so I enjoyed it. We also ordered the chowder which was pretty good, and the croutons surprisingly went well opposed to oysters. The watermelon lemonade alcoholic beverage was also really good.

This was a great spot for the island. The food was tasty and nice portions. I had the lobster roll. The people I sat with had brussel sprouts, fish and clam chowder soup. If you're on the island I definitely recommend.

My daughter and I really enjoyed dining here after lots of walking on the Vineyard. We loved the New England, tavern-style ambience and the delightful view of the ships on the harbor. We decided to get the mac and cheese and found it to be incredibly delicious—comfort food after a long day of sight-seeing, what a treat! I would say there is limited seating (more tables for 2 or 4) and I would imagine it’s very busy in the summer months, but we were off-season so we got a table immediately. Thanks again for a great experience!

We had a fabulous experience here, starting with the roasted Brussels Sprouts, and finishing with a shared order of Codfish tacos. Just great fun in an epic location.

The portion sizes are tremendous, the wine is delicious, the service was SUPERB! Alice (I believe that was her name - she had beautiful purple hair if that rings a bell) was our server. She was timely and kind. Our portions were huge! We had leftovers with takeout boxes. Without even asking, a gentleman opened up a to-go bag as we were about to leave the door so we could carry the to-go boxes all together. I was so surprised by this service! Very observant. The scenery was great - with a beautiful view of the ferries.

This by the water small tavern is an excellent place to sit down and have excellent tasting food and drinks to go with that in a very cozy environment. It has a small menu but everything seems to made fresh, in house, and as per your order. We had very tasty cod fish and red snapper prepared as per the menu entry. Appetizer we had was the calamari. Size is sharable by two and the marinara sauce comes warm, enhancing the taste of the very lightly fried squid rings that are juicy soft, definitely not fried to dry crunchiness. Prices are reasonable for fresh seafood. If you are on the island even for a day, I highly recommend the Black Dog for good food and friendly experience.

The clam chowder at the Black Dog is one of my top 3 favorites on the island. Don't miss it! We sat by the window and watched the ferries come and go. And we went on a Friday evening, there was a live band playing. They were good. I had the winter salad with steak tips for dinner one night. That was Delish! And I had the cod fish sandwich for lunch another time. That was good as well. The portions are huge. We had a slice of chocolate cake for 3 of us.
